What unit price means

Unit price is the cost of one standard unit of a product, such as one ounce, one liter or one item. Packages come in different sizes, so comparing shelf prices alone can mislead. Converting each product to the same unit shows which package actually costs less for the amount you get.

Formula

Unit price = price ÷ (quantity converted to the comparison unit)

Weights convert through grams (1 oz = 28.349523125 g, 1 lb = 453.59237 g), volumes through milliliters (1 US fl oz = 29.5735295625 mL, 1 US gal = 3,785.411784 mL), following the exact definitions in NIST Handbook 44.

Worked examples

Cereal: 16 oz for $4.99 vs 24 oz for $6.49

  1. 4.99 ÷ 16 ≈ $0.3119 per oz.
  2. 6.49 ÷ 24 ≈ $0.2704 per oz.
  3. The 24 oz box costs about 13.3% less per ounce.

Mixed units: 1 kg for $3.00, priced per pound

1 kg = 2.20462 lb, so $3.00 ÷ 2.20462 ≈ $1.361 per lb.

Count: 12 batteries for $9.99 vs 20 for $15.49

$0.8325 per battery vs $0.7745 per battery; the 20-pack is cheaper per item.

Practical uses

Grocery and household shopping, comparing bulk and regular packs, checking whether a sale price is really cheaper, and pricing materials for a project. In business, the same idea gives cost per unit of raw materials.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing fluid ounces (volume) with ounces (weight).
  • Comparing items with different counts per pack without converting to per-item cost.
  • Assuming the larger package is always cheaper. It often is, but not always, especially during promotions.
  • Buying more than you will use before it expires, which raises the real cost per unit used.

Assumptions and limitations

The comparison is on price alone. Quality, concentration (for example, cleaning products that need different doses), taxes and deposits are not included. Prices are rounded only for display.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate unit price?

Divide the price by the quantity. A 16 oz box for $4.99 costs 4.99 ÷ 16 ≈ $0.312 per ounce.

Can I compare ounces with grams?

Yes, as long as both are weights. The calculator converts both items to the comparison unit you choose (1 oz = 28.349523125 g). Weight cannot be compared with volume or item counts.

Are fluid ounces the same as ounces?

No. Fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. Check which one the label uses and pick the matching unit.
