How this conversion works
Magnetic flux is the total magnetic field passing through an area. The SI unit is the weber (one volt-second); the CGS unit is the maxwell.
One maxwell is exactly 10⁻⁸ Wb, so one weber equals 100,000,000 Mx.
Formula: result = value × (base units per source unit) ÷ (base units per target unit)
Where this conversion is used
- Transformer and inductor design calculations.
- Converting older CGS magnetics data in maxwells to webers.
- Physics coursework on Faraday's law.
Worked example: 1 Wb to maxwells
- 1 Mx = 10⁻⁸ Wb.
- 1 ÷ 10⁻⁸ = 100,000,000 Mx.

Things to watch for
- Flux (Wb) is flux density (T) multiplied by area (m²). For tesla and gauss use the Magnetic Flux Density Converter.
Precision and sources
Results are calculated from the definitions above and rounded to 12 significant digits; the converter shows up to eight decimal places and the tables four. Reference: NIST Special Publication 811, Guide for the Use of the International System of Units, Appendix B.
Frequently asked questions
What is a line of flux?
Older texts call one maxwell one “line” of magnetic flux.
